The MillenniumIT Tsunami Rebuilding Effort

MillenniumIT has taken the initiative to build a village for Tsunami Survivors in the Southern Province of Sri Lanka. The Village will help resettle ten families who lost their homes and belongings in the disaster.

As a further step in helping Tsunami survivors rebuild their lives, MillenniumIT will look into the welfare of families settled in the village.

The construction of ten houses with road access facilities is estimated to cost approximately SLR 7.5 Million.

The Village

The site is located within the city limits of Kalutara town in the Southern Province. The number of displaced persons in Kalutara alone was reported to exceed 12,000.

Designed as per Urban Development Authority (UDA) approved plans, each house will comprise two bedrooms, a living room, washroom/toilet, kitchen and two verandahs. The houses will be provided with basic electrical fittings, plumbing and toilet fittings, as well. The floor area of each house will be 550 sq. ft.

Construction

Construction commenced during the last week of October 2006 and was undertaken by a reputed local contractor, on a measure-and-pay basis. We also hired a qualified Quantity Surveyor to supervise construction and ensure that the houses were built according to the Bill of Quantities that were originally approved.

Handing over Ceremony

After some false starts with regard to the date of the handing over ceremony (due to some political interference), the handing over ceremony finally happened on the 21st of March, 2007, presided over by our CEO, Tony Weeresinghe and with participation by MillenniumIT employees and local government officials of the Kalutara district. After the handing over of the keys to the recipients, there were brief speeches, followed by serving of refreshments.
